We believe every parent and guardian should have the opportunity to choose the free public school that best fits their student’s needs, and Texas families are speaking out!  In 2023, charter schools served 227,827 students on 613 campuses, with an estimated 105,000 students waiting for a seat at a charter school.

Charter schools are unique public schools granted some flexibility by the state to be responsive to students’ needs and innovative in education while meeting stricter accountability than traditional ISDs. Charter schools can be closed for up to three years if they experience significant academic and financial problems. Because they are public schools, charter schools are open to all children, do not charge tuition, do not have special admission requirements, and are not affiliated with any particular religion. The leaders and teachers of these student-centered, family- and community-engaged schools are all passionate about the fact that every Texas student deserves a high-quality education.

Representing more than 92 percent of public charter school students across the state, TCSA provides its members with charter-specific training opportunities, legal services, updates on state and federal laws and rules, and discounts on services, allowing more school funding to be directed to the classroom. TCSA also annually advocates for public charter schools at the Texas Capitol and U.S. Congress.
