The Safety Grant Program from Texas Political Subdivisions JSIF (TPS) is back for 2023! The previous year’s program was a HUGE success as TPS awarded almost $100,000 in grants to 13 individual members across the State of Texas. These grant awards were used to purchase items like AEDs, HVAC hail guards, flammable liquid storage cabinets, and catalytic converter clamps, to list a few requested and approved items. TPS remains committed to helping current Fund members receive the tools/equipment/training necessary to implement safe work practices and develop a solid loss prevention program.
The Safety Grant is available to all current members who meet the program’s guidelines. Some examples of what the Safety Grant can be used to purchase are: individual PPE, Lockout/Tagout Equipment, Flammable Liquid Safety Cabinets, SCBA Equipment, Lightning Suppression, AEDs (batteries & service), First Aid Supplies, and the list goes on. The spirit of this program is to help make high-cost items more affordable while ensuring that as many Fund members as possible can benefit. In all cases, the minimum reimbursement request must be at least $500, with a maximum of $10,000 awarded to any single member. To qualify for this Safety Grant, you must be a current member of TPS, and the purchase of equipment/service must be associated with the TPS-provided self-insurance coverage. Applications for monies must be received by the end of business on May 1, 2023, and grants are awarded in August.
Since 2022 was the program's first year, we learned a few things that will help ensure the success of your application. One of the primary reasons that an application was rejected was that the request needed to be associated with the insurance coverage provided through TPS. For example, just because law enforcement coverage is provided by TPS, requesting body armor would not apply unless workers’ compensation insurance is also carried. Similarly, a request for security cameras to protect the property would only apply if P&C coverage is carried, and the purchase of catalytic converter clamps would not be covered unless auto physical damage is carried.
Details of the Safety Grant Program, including examples of qualifying and non-qualifying purchases and the current Safety Grant application, can be found on our Safety Grant Program page. Please read over the entire program, even if you applied and were awarded a safety grant last year.
